Training at IB focuses on both conceptual understanding and skill building. Each module will have short presentations to emphasize the biological/technical concepts involved in the laboratory sessions and experiments, followed by students performing their own experiments under the guidance of instructors. This will enable students not only to understand how the experiments work, but also allow them to gain the relevant hands-on experience.

This training program will enable the participants to:

• Strengthen their understanding of scientific concepts
• Gain hands-on experience in a real laboratory setting
• Develop technical skills in modern molecular biology
• Appreciate various areas of current biomedical research
• Identify and develop interests in academic/industrial research

Module A: Basic DNA Science
* Introduction to Laboratory Safety
* Bacterial culture/growth
* Transformation
* Plasmid Extraction
* Restriction Digestion
* DNA analysis by Agarose Gel Electrophoresis

Module B: Basic Protein Science
* Introduction to Laboratory Safety
* Introduction to Protein Separation techniques
* Protein purification by Chromatographic techniques
* Analysis of purified proteins by SDS-PAGE

Module C: Recombinant DNA Technology
* Introduction to Laboratory Safety
* Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
* Analysis of PCR Products by Agarose Gel Electrophoresis
* Subcloning of PCR Product into cloning vector
* Selection and analysis of recombinant plasmid
* Bioinformatics tools in gene cloning

Module D: Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism Analysis

Module E: Analysis of 16s rRNA genes in bacterial genomes.
